Woodworking in the tropics

I am moving to Gove at Christmas and told a fellow woodworker that I was bringing timber with me to continue building furniture as my hobby. He told me that the timber will warp and that it was a waste of time bringing any. Does anyone up there do woodworking and where do they get timber or can I bring tropical timber and it will be fine. Looking for advice.
