Giddy River - Guwatjurumurru

Discussion Forum | Photo Gallery

The Giddy river is a beautiful place to go camping, swimming or four wheel driving. Being about 55km out of town it is advisable to take water and make sure you have at least half a tank of petrol before you leave.

Some features to watch out for are the mini gorges, rock pools and small cascade waterfalls. It is perfect for swimming, however the area is known for crocks, so before you jump in make sure you take adequate care to check the water.

Getting there

  1. Head out of town towards the Airport on Melville Bay Rd (Sth East) - 13.5 Km
  2. Turn right on the Central Arnhem Rd towards Bullman - approx 15 Km
  3. Turn Right at Bullman/Cape Arnhem intersection (bitumen section)
  4. Follow Central Arnhem Rd - approx 18 Km (Marked with a can or ribbon on a tree.
  5. Turn Left and follow the road along the giddy river.
  6. If you hit the sealed road you have gone about 5km too far.
The track to get to the river is hard to find. Here are some photos of the turnoff to help you get there.

Remember to take enough fuel for the return journey and water if you get stuck and need to walk back.

Swimming

Please take care when swimming. Crocodiles are common in the Arnhem Land region.
It is advisable to only swim where you can see the bottom, or if you are still going to swim wait and observe the water for at least 30 min before entering the water.

Camping

The Giddy river is a great place to camp and you are able to get there on a general permit released by Dhimurru you will have peace and quiet all weekend with plenty of shade, great swimming and the soothing sound of water to put you to sleep.

The campsite is immediately adjacent to the fresh water rock pools, so it is not far from the tent for an early morning swim.

Permit

A Dhimurru general permit is required for this area.

I have been in town for six months, been to Goanna and Latram and I thought that the beaches were the most beautiful area in Arnhem Land.

This last weekend I visited the Giddy River. Wow! It is a very beautiful area, lots of wildlife and very relaxing small waterfalls surrounding some majestic swimming spots.

Get in your car and go! You will not regret it.
