1.2%Swing to CLP, Seat retained by Labour.

The retiring Labor MP is Syd Stirling, who has represented the district since 1990. Stirling will be retiring at the 2009 election, having served as Deputy Chief Minister and Treasurer from August 2001 until November 2007.


Nhulunbuy is a mixed electorate that combines the mining town of Nhulunbuy with numerous aboriginal communities, the most important of which are Galiwinku and Yirrkala and surrounding outstations.


Loses 627 voters in areas around Gapuwiyak into Arnhem, on paper cutting the Labor majority slightly from 26.1% to 25.5%.


This seat has existed since 1974. The electorate derives its name from the town of Nhulunbuy, which in turn is the aboriginal name for Mt Saunders, adjacent to the town.

Main Candidates

The new Labor candidate is Lynne Walker, who works at Rio Tinto's Alcan Gove operation. The Country Liberal candidate is Djuwalpi Marika, who is the town clerk of the Yirrkala Dhanbul Community Association and was the unsuccessful CLP candidate in Arnhem at the 2005 election.


Labor retain, though it will probably suffer a substantial swing with the retirement of Syd Stirling.
