Cape Arnhem - Wanuwuy (Wan-u-woy)

Discussion Forum | Photo Gallery

Cape Arnhem is a restricted area which is fantastic for a family day out at the beach, or camping over a weekend. The fishing out on the cape is fantastic. There are many rock escarpments next to beautiful, deep water.

Getting there

  1. Head out of town towards the Airport on Melville Bay Rd (Sth East) - 13.5 Km
  2. Turn right on the Central Arnhem Rd towards Bullman - approx 15 Km
  3. Turn Left at Bullman/Cape Arnhem intersection (bitumen section)

Remember to take enough fuel for the return journey and water if you get stuck and need to walk back.

Swimming

Please take care when swimming. Crocodiles are common in the Arnhem Land region.
It is advisable to only swim where you can see the bottom, or if you are still going to swim wait and observe the water for at least 30 min before entering the water.

Camping

Cape Arnhem is a great place to camp as there is very limited permits released by Dhimurru you will have peace and quiet all weekend with plenty of shade, great swimming and the soothing sound of the ocean to put you to sleep.

If you are going to camp on a beach ensure that your camp is visable and ensure you have cars parked either side of your camp to protect you from other cars driving along the beach at night time.

Permit

A Dhimurru special permit is required for this area.
The area is restricted to ten cars at a time.
Note that there are areas of Cape Arnhem which are considered sacred sites. Permits from Dhimurru do not allow access to these areas.
